Jonathan has returned to the same square mile of coastline on the Isle of Lewis for the last twenty-five years, drawing and painting beaches, cliffs, croftlands and inlets in all the changing moods that the Hebrides offer. He also works in Italy, France and Cornwall. His paintings represent an ongoing enquiry into the relationship between figurative motif and visual language. ‘Drawing is when I am most alive – completely in the place and in the moment. The paintings I make in the studio are an attempt to distil that experience, exploring the image on the surface of the canvas through lines, marks and layers of colour.’

Jonathan Smith was born in 1958 in Aberdeenshire. He lives and works in Sussex.
