Born in 1967, Tom grew up near Lewes within the South Downs . Tom paints on the spot, whatever the weather, and it is the countryside and coast around him which is his inspiration. ‘The artist’s job is to make poetry out of the ordinary,’ he says. ‘ I get to know the areas very well; every time I go back it’s like adding another layer of knowledge. Sometimes I am struck by something I get an emotional response from. …it’s a continuous process of reproducing, improvising and altering my response. I am always surprised by what comes out.’ The result is fresh, honest paintings that are emotionally transforming and frankly beautiful. Not only can the viewer get happily lost in the depicted scene, the paint-strokes themselves are a thing of beauty, sometimes thickly laid, often a myriad of colours, always articulate.
Tom trained at Brighton, then Norwich School of Art. Previous exhibitions include: Gallery 10 (London), Anna Mei Chadwick Gallery (London), The Roy Miles Gallery (London), Charleston Farmhouse, The Anna Mei Chadwick Gallery at Cork St, Collins and Hastie (London), Affordable Art Fair (London) and  HQ Gallery (Lewes).
